Real world flying

Postby Mr_Average » Thu Nov 27, 2014 8:25 am

I've seen that a few on here talk about some 'real' flying. As someone who has just started on the path to ppl greatness, I thought that I'd start an off topic thread for the flying buffs.

So far I've flown (only as a student) a C152, a C172 and a DR400. Only 10 hours towards the ppl and I've not done my solo yet.

Haven't done any real world piloting myself sadly, tis an expensive thing to do and for the time being I put my money into other things. That said I do enjoy FSX now and again, have not picked up Prepare3D just yet.

Was in the ATC in my youth (Air Training Corps/Cadets).

Flew a Chipmonk a few times - Google it!

Best memory was flying over the Forth road and rail bridges. When the instructor decided to turn around and fly underneath them and doing a loop back over the rail bridge.

Pretty spectacular stuff for 16 year kid! :D

The club that I fly at do aerobatic sorties for the un-initiated. A fellow student went and vowed never to do it again, so I haven't been tempted. Slow and low is my favourite.

I did about twenty-five hours in a Cessna 152 when I was a not-quite-kid.

Sadly it was far too expensive to continue, although I had done a few solos by the time I had to quit, so it was still a pretty good experience.

Although, while the space faring me is pretty casual about flight, even through hard vacuum, the real me has - weirdly - developed something of a phobia about it now. Which kids kind of strange. I figure it's my subconscious trying to make sure I don't spend any more money. :)

Yeah it's not a cheap hobby. Costs 130€ per hour where I go. Plus you eventually need a headest, maps, club fees and federation fees. Luckily landing fess are very cheap in France, except for the big airports.
