I also need linux help, but not like the other topic

Postby Loriath » Mon Feb 29, 2016 12:07 pm

I have an old Acer One Aspire that I have here and have not used much in the last year or so, but I want to start using it more as a Second Screen when playing ED.

It originally came with WinXP (gag!) and about 2 years ago, I threw Linux Mint on it. I like Mint, but not sure if I should be using something else. I heard about Mints Hack last week and really am gunshy about updating it.

I like the Ubuntu based systems, but hate the Ubuntu default windows manager so the distro should be based on it. Prefer to have a distro that is super lightweight and is not installing a lot of crap by default.

Here are the basic Specs.

Intel Atom N270 1.6ghz 32bit
2GB Ram
160gb HD
Wifi and ethernet
1024X600 display
Card Reader
Webcam Integrated

So what lightweight ubuntu based distro would you people recommend?

I would go with debian then.

Its the mother distro ubuntu uses for its build.
Main difference is debian focuses highly on stability so it won't be the most cutting edge but you will get what functions and WM you want and nothing else.
The install procedure is a bit more complex than Ubuntu because of this naturally but you will get an os install that's exactly what you want and nothing more.

You can of course ass all the repo's for Ubuntu and get the cutting edge versions on a very stable plattform .

Rule 2: No such thing as overkill, as long as there are reloads.

What about the other Ubuntus, like Xubuntu?

If you want a long list of distributions to choose from, Distrowatch helps with that :D

For cutting edge packages Arch linux is the one, but the install process needs some knowledge, it's all in command line. Arch wiki has instructions for beginners and more experienced users but even with those it is nowhere near ubuntus "click next, next, next, done" style.
Antergos and Manjaro are both based on Arch and have a graphical installer if interested in trying out.
I play on PC, in the Mobius PVE Eurasia group.

Problem with Ubuntu and its Flavours is feature creep. There is so much crap included in the base install that I spend more time removing the crap than actually installing. It is as bad as when you buy a new PC and you have remove all the crapware/adware/trials/demos and other BS they put on the PC.
