Intellectual debate is something like throwing a bunch of old folk on the other side of the table to a bunch of teenagers, and the teenagers have to propose the motion "computer games are a waste of time". Debate isn't about whether you're right, it's whether you can argue convincingly. The people on the facebook page are trying to do this with a theory that has never really been accepted - for about 2.500 years there has been documented evidence that people accepted the world is a sphere. Apparently the likliest cause of the misconception that medieval people thought the earth was flat is the stylised account of Columbus's life by the Sleepy Hollow writer Washinton Irving.

true, but for Intellectual debate to take place having at least an ounce of intelligence would seem to be a prerequisite, as would the ability to source facts like how long a canal is.

Maybe being able to debate convincingly about stupid and in-defendable theories is a proof of intelligence? Some kind of mental sport... :)

Absolutely. I don't that "this forum thinks the world is flat" is a particularly bad thing to be debating for the hell of it - just that FB is not the venue for such a debate.

Thaniks for sharing! A real day-maker.

Very VERY much appreciated, thanks. Facebook is quite a strange machine ... especially since they dare to enforce "real-name" policies for some quite Adam's leafy reason.
I also only used the abstract from Andy but even that was enough for a daymaker.
