Btw: I didn't get a mail notification that you posted. I have the option ticked.
Edit: I can only tick a box for personal messages. How do I get a notification when someone has posted in a thread that I have posted in?

You have to "watch" or subribe to a forum or Topic. and there is an option in your profile to auto-watch a topic you wrote in:

Board preferences->Edit posting defaults->Notify me upon replies by default

You're welcome.
I believe it shouldn't be the default because it doesn't take long and the board floods your email-inbox. Newly registered users might be a little disturbed by the unwanted mails.

So people who want to auto-subcrbe can change the setting.
It is much more a problem if users don't want the mails and don't find the place to turn it off, IMO.
