All possible missions are randomised between periods and unavailable ones do show so you can see what they need on the unobtainable section. Ie missions have spawn timers that's my guess.

I seen smuggling missions that required more then trading ranks they also had ranks on combat and exploration. I think my highest pay out has been 200k on a single mission. Rank helps but what helps a lot is reputation with local governments.
Point defense wont ever fire on a ship itself. When they fire its either because there are mines being placed or torpedos/missiles being fired off from a distance that are going to be near you, or are targeted at you. Yup, i keep getting similar payouts but the average is a bit higher though. I used to smuggle between kamadhenu - hip 20277 and one more system nearby.
