I don't see beta colliding with the current game, because beta would be an additional software with a slightly different name / install path and running on separate servers with a limited universe (perhaps even only one system, depending on the features they want to test).

Good luck getting it for Xmas - ordered three shirts "in stock" on Dec. 9th (payed with Paypal or creditcard, so "at once") only to receive an email on the 19th, that two of those in-stock-shirts are actually out of stock and won't be available till sometime in January ...

To me it seems obvious that FD's programers/developers are not in charge with the financial/legal part - more likely legal and accountant department(s) have a quite different staff - so the developers have still time to, well, develop and/or fix bugs. Since afaik FD is still more of a game developer...

I think it will still vary from system to system because of all included masses (suns, planets, ...) and chosen flight path. You automatically slow down when you get closer to big masses ...
