New Rig: GTX vs RTX

Postby schwifty » Fri Jan 18, 2019 11:36 pm

Aye Commanders,

I've recently found back to Elite after ~3y absence. Since then, my workstation was not able for decent gaming.
I got me Elite for PS4 and now I'm in full throttle again, you know :D
But Playstation is not as satisfying, don't know why ...

Since weeks I've been trying to figure out a capable system on budget (1.5k-2k €). I found mysqlf a bit late after nvidia's launch of the new RTX cards, making it almost impossible to buy a GTX which I actually wanted.

Now, would Elite actually in any terms benefit from the new cards? For example, the GTX cards seem to still have more shaders, and I think Elite does not benefit from the new live-raytracing capability.
Am I right in this assumption? I also now, in terms of speed the new cards are faster.

Besides the price tag, which card is technically better for elite?
I tend to get a used 1080Ti for ~600€ (germany) unless it would be goofy to do that.

Any inofficial statements from FD?

thanks for any ideas!! o7

Disregarding RTX feature.

the usual bump between generations hold true only this time everything also got a bump in price as well.

So a 2070 performs shot on par with a 1080, a 2080 about par with a 1080ti etc.

What you need depends on what you want to do.

If you For instance want to go full VR.
Well a 2080ti would still leave you wanting.
High fps 4k a 2080, 2080ti would go nicely.

Regular 60fps 4k a 2070/1080 would do ok.

Personally I don't recommend 4k, better off imo to go with something like a 1440p monitor at 120hz+
basically a similar deal as above and pq difference between 1440p and 4k rather swimmingly small and much more perceivable than 1080p vs 1440p.

As for regular 1080p@60 it doesn't take all that much, a 1060 6GB would be all you need.

Thanks for your answer!

Yes, I indeed forgot to mention that I'm hot to try VR, (just don't know whether to go rift or vive or ...).

> Well a 2080ti would still leave you wanting.
does that mean a 2080Ti would still be not enough for VR in highest setting?

Problem is, even if I wouldn't go VR, I got a LG 38UC99-W Monitor (3840 x 1600), cause I need a hell of a lot of space for terminals.
Of course, for gaming that's suboptimal. But I wouldn't like to go much down with resolution or gfx details.

Still not sure whether 1080Ti or 2080Ti is better for Elite + VR || QHD+

Well I'm quite pleased with my 1080ti.

But I too trigger fps stepdown modes in elite.
But granted that's probably elite needing optimisation rather than the other way around.
a 1080 or above should give a very good VR experience.

And that would include the 2080/2080ti etc.
possibly even in a pinch the 2070.

There isn't any doubt though.

If you aren't concerned about price.

RTX 2080ti is the best non titan card around.
And the only titan to beat it barely in anything is the RTX titan at $2500.

My 2080 in elite in 1440 @144Hz is sleeping most of the time. FPS only come down from 144fps close to stars and stations. Honestly even a 1080 is overkill at that kind of resolution.
What you may like is to be able to use supersampling and still retain decent stable FPS (and have at last some antialiasing).
I have yet to try it but i play this cursed game once a month ^^

I'd say make your choice based on games that are really taxing the videocard.

oh, I thought the "ti" actually means titan. Kind of misleading if that's not the case.

I was just sceptical because I always thought: SHADERS, MORE SHADERS!
And I read somewhere that the 2080Ti has less than the 1080Ti, that's the only reason I was stuggling (despite the price).

Right now I'm trying to find out if Elite has "real" VR (as in 3D). Seems not.

Being on the hunt for multiple weeks now to find proper hardware, running in circles. Intel? AMD? RAM?
Prices vary almost every day and product information in webshops are missing information (especcially on RAM, f.e dualrank/singlerank, CL...) and have to buy at different shops because of high price-differences.
It's just so frustrating that I'm about to surrender.

Oh elite is one of the longest running and better implementation of VR.
I have no idea where you read that.

I haven't played it any other way since summer 2016 and that's over 2000 hours worth of game time.

That is mostly with the rift.
But was hoping to upgrade to the new pimax that arrived about a week ago, by it was DOA :(
Should be getting a replacement soon I hope.

As for screen options I have at my disposal.
34" ultra wide 3440×1440 monitor.
65" 4k hdr tv (Panasonic dx900, fully calibrated)
Sony hw50 1080p projector on a 100" screen.

Only device worth playing on after VR is VR.
It's the difference between remotely controlling a spaceship through some dudes head mounted go pro.

Or actually flying the thing.

yeah! that's the reason I want to try it out :-)

> I have no idea where you read that.
random youtube commenting guys. fully reliable and trustworthy source, I know :-D

My first intense was to try VR with PS4pro+PSVR (cause only thing I need to buy is the psvr), but it seems PS4pro is not good enough, VR is not "real" and bad implementation. As in like still watching 2d. Can imagine that the depth is missing you'd expect from VR.
Why else should they speak Elite is not a real VR game? Of course it's made for it and should be, but technically, it's not real VR. From what I understand, it's the cockpit-viewing mode you also could use on a usual monitor and control the ship.

Then I read that vive and rift are not worth the money, too young so to speak. something about rgb subpixel, round pixels, black gutters, blablabla.

Never heard of Pimax. Visiting the site right now. Looks promising?

Sony cannot, will not launch a VR game that wouldn't work on the regular ps4.

That said even the ps4 pro is so ridiculously underpowered compared to a current mid range gaming pc, it really isn't that much more powerful than the regular one anyways, they mostly added some slight support for HDR and a most basic upscaler for 4k.

Whenever I see ps4 gameplay I honestly get a little sick. Constant frame drops, hardly ever reaching even 30fps in most cases.

The vive or rift isn't that expensive, heck my rift cost half as much as a decent monitor would.
And gives a lot more.
Even after 2000+ hours of VR elite I still get a grin on my face when I fire up elite.

Granted I might be a little insane.
I spent after all somewhere between three-four thousand on my current setup over the last few years...
My hotas cost as much as vive pro + kit.
HTC are being morons at the pricing though so I would rather be considering an oddessy over a vive pro .
