I've got a good PC now (i7 8700, RTX 2070, 16GB RAM). What would be a good starter VR for Elite that I can put on my Amazon wish list for my family to laugh at?

The S.

Unless your IPD is totally out of range.
It is the least hassle and most up-to-date and fully features kit for half the price it's main competitors.

It's not perfect and they are working on a few annoying software bugs still.
But overall it's the most complete and not overpriced package for pc VR.

I think I'm gonna go with the S......

Looks like the Reverb is not kind to spectacle wearers......

Plus today we just won £1000 in our banks random lottery sorta thing that I did not know we was in......

Unusual as we normally win jack shit in anything................

@ De Carabas.......

If you've never played ED in VR......You WILL get a hard on......

Well found out my IPD today.......

64mm.....

So that along with the numerous vids I have seen....

Especially one tonight from a CV1 user comparing it in 5 sims settles it......

Rift S it is....Probably next week......

Not too worried about the audio as I have some Bose in ear if needed........

Looking forward to a bit of clarity....Which has been my main gripe all along....

I’ve had a reminder from Specsavers that I’m due a check-up. Is that where you got your IPD measured Kharma or did you stand in front of a mirror with a ruler? :D

Update: Oh, ok. Not a bad idea then http://doc-ok.org/?p=898

LOL.....

I phoned Specsavers as I had my eyes tested there a few months ago.....

After a bit of umming and erring they gave it to me once I explained what it was for.....

I think they thought I was buying a new pair of glasses online and were a bit hesitant to give it to me.

Ask for it when they test yours.....

They use all digital stuff now...So it should be more accurate than the mirror way.....

IPD is the one measurement they don't have to give you on request.

Hey Kharma,

I just got a RIft S today. I was inspired by your post when I read it last week.

IMO, the S blows the CV1 away, and I can even run it at VR Medium and 1.25 HMD Quality on my old 4790k system with a 1080. I also have a 64mm IPD. So if your system is at least that good (bad) or newer, you'll be golden. I'm also using some mid-distance reading glasses (cheap frameless readers) and there is no problem fitting or with them rubbing against the lenses. The inside-out tracking is so much better than the problematic USB sensors for the CV1. The sweet spot is huge and the clarity is pretty good - much better than the CV1 - but there is still a way to go. The built-in sound sucks, but my headset fit over the halo head band, and it probably has better speakers and mic comapred to anything that would be provided, so I don't really care about that.
