Hmmmmm......Choices......Choices

Postby Cmdr Kharma » Sun Jun 02, 2019 5:20 pm

Rift S or HP Reverb.......

I can see pro's and cons of both......

But almost every review states Reverb is a blinder for sims......

Thoughts.....

Well the reverb was recalled entirely, and I have yet to hear any update on release plan.

It's also quite systems hungry.
I.e better have a 1080ti at minimum.

I have an S myself and it is smashing value, it's at least €200 less than reverb.
Only huge problem is the fixed IPD, it either works for you or it doesn't at all.
If you are in the 61-66mm range it mostly should work of course no late varies.

It happens to work for me, and it's far more comfortable to wear with glasses than the original one,
By which I mean I can fit my normal glasses in there at all, and I can read with quite ease the various displays and gauges in DCS at a glance.
Seriously the S and the new f14 in DCS.
It's basically a multitude of steam gauges with tiny text, and I can pretty much decipher all of them.
And it's not much more system hungry than the original.

These spectacles where a no go on the old rift, the vive and the pimax, although you can get them in if you glue an old face insert from a gear VR or something on top of the normal one.

Avoid Pimax like they are a fucking plauge, not that you asked.

The S can have some issues being investigated in regards to power demand, but Oculus is adament they will be able to fix that with firmware updates.
But you should have a USB 3.0 capable of delivering full power, or it could get really weird.

Cheers Tor.....

Gotta feeling my IPD is outside the range......Which would be a bummer...........

I can't find my last eye test where I specifically asked them to write down my IPD.......

Gonna pop in there this week for a quick measure........

Nice to know about the glasses as well......I bought a pair just for VR.....Smallest I could get and they still get caught in the rift even with the VR cover extension.....

I Do have a 1080 Ti........

And the reverb is shipping in the UK......5-10 days.....I can pull the trigger in the HP store now.....

But I think I will wait.......See what transpires in the next few months.....

Have you had any Rift black screen problems?

Ohh and what about the shit sound.....

Yes, and no, and maybe.

Had a few problems that all work out to being a bad cable, so been doing the support thing with Oculus in regards to that.
Think they have been a bit swamped on their support though so it's been slow going.

Last I heard they want me to ship them my cable back, with an 8-12 days for them to get something new back to me :(

Mostly been having connection issues with the DP connection, rather than the USB, with the occasional flickering noise presenting across the panel.

It suddenly started to play nice again earlier this week so have been getting some more testing in, and I'm quite pleasantly surprised by it.
Particularily the tracking, at least for the HMD is improved as well as the panel.
Moving from Pentile Oled to full RGB lcd is a massive improvement, with a slight decrease in black levels.
Still the blacks are better than any monitor I have ever used.

As for sound.

I think the old one had shit audio, the included on the S is even worse.
But I have no problems fitting my regular headphones over them like I did with the others.

Thank you very much Tor.....

I'll keep looking......But will probably go Rift S.....

And put the CV1 on the bay......

Valve effort looks good(ish).....Price is shite though.......

At least things in VR seem to be improving.......Which is good......

Although I doubt my wife or bank manager would agree with that.....

Get it somewhere with a return policy if you can, like Amazon or some such.

Cause the fixed optics, etc.

Tor.....

Just had a brain fart video wise.....

The S being one screen unlike the CV1 does it record the whole shebang? ......

Rather than just the left eye?

That could also be a factor.........

Unless my IPD is waaaay orf to render the purchase a no no.............

My Rift S has been solid.

My only complaint is the regular 'recalibration' of the play area, probably because I sit it on a shelf outside the play area when I'm not using it. It doesn't seem to like that.

Nope, it still renders each eye in separate passes that gets lens distorted, merged and pushed to the HMD as one, same as with the cv1.

If your wondering for recording purposes you can open oculus debug mirror and record both eyes that way.

But it and OBS can be wonky.
And that is more like recording a desktop than game.
Anything you see in the HMD will be recorded.

That's a lot of acronyms and technical stuff.

I've got a good PC now (i7 8700, RTX 2070, 16GB RAM). What would be a good starter VR for Elite that I can put on my Amazon wish list for my family to laugh at?
