Playing 60hz vs 144hz

Hi guys,

while messing around with settings I noticed that if I set 60 hz as a refresh option and cap the framerate at 60 Hz I get a difference in gpu heat and sound, also I have an RTX 2080 ti whcih produces some coil whine if using 144hz and cap the frame rate at 120, especially in stations, so I was wondering
how many of you play at 144 hz?

Does anyone else has this?
It might be just my mind playing tricks but going down from 120 fps cap to 60 refresh rate and 60 fps it seems a bit more ... unresponsive (not sure how to describe it otherwise).

Thing is I am just wondering if there is actually any benefit to 120 hz for elite since setting it to 60 hz seems to quiet down the buzzing and how loud the gpu gets.

Well the computer not just the card has to work a little more than twice as hard, it's more than twice the frames after all.

As for the responsiveness.
At 60 fps a new frame is generated every 16.6667ms, at 144 fps that wait is dropped to 6.9444ms.

A difference in just under 10ms and contrary to console developers, "30fps is smooth" (at 33.33 ms,)
and movie moguls at 24fps (44.667 ms)
That's well within human perception.

Now, if you Google that you will get some statement like "average human reaction time is about 250ms"
Those numbers have been repeated since some time in the seventies. And perceive and react are very different.

Reacting is a far bigger task.
To "react" you first perceive, decide on an action, and then execute it.
In gaming, essentially every frame is a past snapshot, the lower the frame rate the longer it was since that frame was actually the case.
And reaction times can like most be trained, guess what games do?

Your card, and I'm sure, the rest of the rig is designed to do it. Coil whine isn't pleasant but it's certainly not damaging.
A lot of people doesn't notice cause they are wearing headphones.

Wether you limit to one or the other is entirely your choice but as you mentioned there is a real noticeable difference.

I play everything with 144 Hz (except VR of course)

First of all, I´m over 40, so my reaction time is not measured in milliseconds :D
But a monitor running at 60 Hz and one at 144 Hz makes a big and noticable difference for me. Just moving around your mouse or UI elements looks much better at 144 Hz.

But I might also just be lucky, I don´t notice and additional noise from my graphics card at 144 Hz.

Hey I'm 38 and I hit 249 before my coffee :P

Yeah, I'm getting slower too.
Need to get my eyes checked again too :\
Which means we need every edge we can get.

Resolution and refresh rate came up over in this thread too, just FYI ...

That's well within human perception.
Which is why movies don't look so hot with 'live action.'

I consider them fast slideshows at this point.

My 2080 is quiet at 144Hz, and only whines if i disable the framerate limit.
Elite is not exactly pushing that type of cards unless you play multi-monitor or VR.

And yea i definitely notice the difference between 60 and lotsofhertz. People saying 30 fps is smooth seem to misunderstand the difference between having the illusion of motion, and having a smooth illusion of motion :)

For the heck of it ... I did some testing in Elite with my LG 32GK650G-B (32" 16:9 1440p @ 144Hz G-Sync -- yes, G-Sync for sub-US$400 here in the states) (EDIT: It's back to US$549), instead of my 80Hz Oculus Rift S, to see if I could get any whine.

Understand I have the compact, 211x125x41mm (8.3x4.9x1.6") Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Mini, which only has two (2) fans and can really 'spin up.' I was curious how much noise it would make compared to the reports of the newer RTX units.

It's also in an ultra-compact, 176x222x276mm (7x9x11") Silverstone SG05 SFX Mini-ITX so I can hear the fans right up against the side of the case, as it pulls in cool air directly from the side within a centimeter.
