Minimum requirements for laptop

Postby Unite » Fri Jan 04, 2019 1:45 pm

Back a few years ago when I played elite dangerous I was just about able to get it working on my laptop but now it's an absolute slide show on the same hardware. The laptop is getting on in years but I was hoping to try and drag a bit more life out of it rather than cough up to buy a new one. It's an Acer aspire with an amd a4 apu. I can fit an a8-3500 in it as an upgrade for about £30 but was wondering if anyone would know if that will allow me to run ed. I know I'll have to play it with all the graphical setting on low but I'd like the ability to do a spot of mining or a trade run etc while sitting in front of the tv. My main pc rig is in the man cave outside but I can't generally get out there until late most nights (not until kids are in bed).

So do you think my spending £30 would be worth it?

I've never used/understood the AMD chips. My guess though is that it might help but it might be like trying to polish a turd.
How do the rest of the specs match?

Minimum:

OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
Processor: Quad Core CPU (4 x 2GHz)
Memory: 6 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 470 or AMD R7 240 (Direct X 11 functionality required)
Network: Broadband Internet Connection
Hard Drive: 8 GB available space

Recommended:

OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i7-3770K Quad Core CPU or AMD FX 4350 Quad Core CPU
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 770 / AMD Radeon R9 280X or better
Network: Broadband Internet Connection
Hard Drive: 25 GB available space

Recommended minimum graphics driver:

Nvidia: 358.50
AMD: 15.11.1 Update

Ummm not so good with 4gb ram but I suppose that too can be upgraded. In all fairness to the amd apu it's internal graphics is considerably more powerful than that offered by Intel on the likes of the i3 or i5.

Might be better saving my pennies and going for a new laptop.

Yes, if you don't have a reasonable dedicated GPU then I think you would be throwing £30 away.

Your best bet is probably going to be getting a new laptop entirely. What budget would you say you have for one?

At this point in time my laptop budget sits at about £30 lol. I'm just going to save some money for a new one eventually. In the mean time I'll just keep taking myself out to the man cave and putting in a couple of hours of elite each night.

Once I get a few £ together I'll probably be looking to spend in or around £500.

Wait for the 7nm Zen2 laptops.
I'm really interested to see their performance as AMD starts leveraging TSMC at 7nm this year.
We're about to see AMD leapfrog Intel on CPU, and they already have the GPU ... sans nVidia.
But in the middle-of-the-road 15.6" gaming notebook, for US$600-800, I think AMD is going to take it, handily, this year.

gaming on laptops is usually not a good idea anyway.

And don't be impressed by lithography numbers. AMD will always manage to provide 7nm cooking stoves to gamers worldwide :)

They have a new one.
The radeon VII has a running temp of 99c.

It's fine though cause it doesn't thermally throttle before it reaches 110c.
