EDIT: Just realized I was responding to the old, original post (was out-of-order).
I've been playing Skyrim VR as of late, not much Elite. I went to 3 sensors and it's made all the difference.
Then it's not a power issue ... unless the mainboard itself is maxed out, and cannot provide sufficient current. Have you tried using a volt-meter to see if you're seeing voltage drop, as a result of inadequate current? You can usually run an app in Windows to see the voltage as well.
I'm on a little Z97 myself, the ASRrock Z97E-ITX/ac, as my primary gaming platform is still an i7-4790K, upgraded to a GTX 1080. I've got no issues running 1-2 sensors on XHCI (USB 3.0) and the other 1-2 on EHCI (USB 2.0) hubs.
No need to wipe, they can be installed side-by-side. Now I used native, 64-bit uEFI boot with a GUID Partition Table (GPT), so it was easy to make them co-exist. But I think they still can with a legacy, 16-bit BIOS Int13h Disk boot with a Master Boot Record (MBR) partition table.
The reason I finally went to Windows 10 was because I needed 8+ for the Touch.
That's all I use mine for. It sucked up way, way too much power to be used generally, and is overkill. I'm all mobiles for everything else.
I keep a pair of older, Zotac ZBox Nano AQ01 (2012-era AMD A4-5000, quad-core 1.5GHz) units at work for this very purpose. Things I cannot with my company systems and servers, and I have them networked. Only run Linux on them.
I also, often pick up sub-US$200, "off-lease" Dell Latitude Ultrabooks for this as well, both my wife and I have one for 'light' travel. Since they have a valid Windows key, sometimes I dual-boot with Windows. But it rarely gets booted.
My primary "Mobile Workstation" (Dell Precision M4800) being Linux, with 32GiB RAM and 5TB of NAND and Hybrid NAND+Disk. It allows me to run a full datacenter of VMs. But I don't like lugging that around nealry as much (15.6" and over 1" thick).
