Linus looks at Pimax 8k

Postby GlobusDiablo » Wed Nov 08, 2017 6:53 am

Notice that Linus hints at the fact that running the 5k version at native resolution might be a better option than the upscaled "8k" version. Interesting.

Kind of feel January release might be a bit quick.
I can wait a few months longer if the product is less beta.

Rule 2: No such thing as overkill, as long as there are reloads.

Interesting. One of my biggest reservations about this has been the upscaling part of it.

The upscaling is what least worries me.

Also.
Linus is flat wrong saying OLEDS change instantly.
yes they are very quick from one colour to another, but going from black to lit.
or Off to on they are very slow.
So slow in fact that oculus is actually not tuning off the pixel. They set black level as two steps above off for the panel to reduce the blurring.

Problem is this also screw up the contrast and gamma curves so the rift looks less vivid than the vive.

There is a simple reg setting to disable this, but it also disables the Mura correction applied.
Another problem with OLEDS is it is very hard to get a uniform panel.
Pixels are off and this looks like permanent smudged pixels.
So depending on your panels this could end up looking horribly.

In fact it is very likely that Oculus will ditch the Samsung OLEDS for the next iteration and to for the same high response panels that are now coming in the Pimax.
