1080 or 1440?

Postby CMDR Allbright » Sun Jan 22, 2017 2:15 pm

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a new monitor for my PC. Which resolution would be optimal for an RX480 Gaming X?? A 1080 with FreeSync or 1440?

Any suggestions?

not a clue, im still running at 1920x1080, serves me just fine with everying at max on a GTX970. keep in mind that going to a higher res will probably mean that you will need to upgrade your card sooner rather than later. but hey, its a PC master race thing.

If it is the 8GB card it should be plenty fine for 1440p

The main question is what kind of 1440p are you looking at?
A 3440x1440 (21:9 ultra wide) or a 2560x1440 (16:9, same aspect as 1080p)

Personally I have the former, it's a great screen, but even the games who do support the ultra wide resolution has some of the same weirdness in them as surround screen\eyefinity does, and most if not every game has a stretched fov kind of reminiscent of a corrected fish eye lense camera.

But for workflow, desktop use it's brilliant, almost like having three screens, same would apply for RTS's etc I guess.
But if gaming is the only or main concern I might recommend the 16:9 1440p.

Thanks for the replies Commanders.

I decided to go with this one:

https://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VX2757-MHD-FreeSync-Monitor-DisplayPort/dp/B01A0ZRRCI/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

1080, 75 Hz, 2ms response time, FreeSync. The reviews are pretty good and it's a decent compromise between price and performance. I originally planned on a 32 inch 1440 with FreeSync but they all seemed a bit pricey. I'm saving my pennies for a system upgrade when AMD's new Ryzen cpu's hit the shelves.

At any rate, it's a damn sight better then the 11 year old 21 inch monitor I'm using now.

I'm still waiting for 1080@120Hz to be commonplace on 4K@60Hz TVs with HDMI 2.0.
But apparently the consumer base doesn't care enough about high refresh rates to pressure vendors.

Glad this topic has come up, I've just started thinking about a new monitor and what I think I want is a 27", 144Hz, 1440p with G-Sync.
Problem is, they seem to beveryexpensive.

So i suppose my question is, should I go for 1440p without G-Sync or 1080p with G-sync?

But I use a TV as a second monitor. Am I allowed to post?
