It would not be the first time that they have overwritten the drivers in whole or in part.

Instead of a full re-install, what about a SFC check of install followed by a complete uninstall and reinstall of the NVIDIA drivers after Windows has put THEIR version on board?

SFC check? The acronym isn't clicking right now.

I did fully remove the drivers with DDU, it then defaulted to Microsoft Basic Display Driver. I can install the oldest Nvidia driver now and it mostly works, but my second display via tablet now crashes the driver (may be a Windows issue, not sure), and I occasionally get a 1 FPS slowdown, which requires a reboot, then it usually works again.

If I try to install a newer driver, I get Code 43 again.

One thing you can do, that will give yo a quick way back, is to create an image of your current Windows installation. Then do a real clean install. Then you will get an answer within a couple of hours whether it's actually the driver or if it's one of your other things on the PC causing it.
If the problem is still there with a clean install, you can simply restore your old image.

System File Checker utility in Windows. Open an Admin command Prompt and type SFC /? for instructions. Looks for corrupt or bad files and replaces them with good ones from the windows install media.

If you go this route, I recomend Macrium Reflect Free version.
