Do I need to invest in high end controllers?

I read somewhere on the main Elite forum, that design of this game allows for someone playing using the keyboard and mouse to be a formidable opponent to someone using hundreds of pounds worth of gear. Assuming that both have reasonable experience with the game, how true do you think this statement is?

Currently, I am using a combination of xbox controller, mouse, and app on my tablet. Will I have to think about joysticks, VR headsets, etc in order not to be left behind?

I have no desire to be Pilot elite as it were, but just to ensure that I am giving myself the best opportunity to get the most out of this game.

I'm using xbox360 wireless controller, keyboard and mouse. Don't need anything else.

I like the ease of use with the xbox controller. No hassle. :)

I haven T-Flight thrustmaster for 40 pounds and it is great :) I like it more than xbox controller or keyboard and mouse. But you are tied to the desk. If you do not want to be tied to the desk then xbox controller is the best value option.

I think the skill of the player is key though not the controller. You should be able to do well with whatever if you practice enough.

Yes, skill is key. Yet just keyboard and mouse is a pain to master. It is much more accessible with a controller or joystick with or without throttle.
I feel like a natural with my X-55 HOTAS. 8-)

Same here. Keyboard and mouse work fine (especially if you’re not dog fighting all the time) but I find the X-55 way more comfortable.

I echo the above, it's dependent on the pilots skill. I bought an X55 (not pro) I told myself it was better to start with a joystick rather than learn another controller then have to switch. Definitely helps with the learning curve.

"all the gear, no idea"

One interesting thing to note is that a lot of the Developers use xbox 360 controllers. I use a T-Flight Hotas X which can be picked up for about £35 if you shop around so in no way top end and it works brilliantly for me.

Using a cheap joystick and keyboard. Works fine enough for me :)

I Have bought a logitech X3D joystick for the game, remapped all the controlls and are really happy with it. Now did i hear, that the thrustmaster HOTAS X would deliver a good performance, so i got if...and was disapointed. The placement of the buttons was...meh and there where not enough. Then to compensate, the thrustlever was hindering my reach to my keyboard for the missing controlls.
Today i got a Saitek X52. Tomorrow when i am off from work, i'll give it a try =)
..btw
does someone need a cheap Hotas joystick? xD
