US retailers trying to clear GTX 980 Ti stock?

Postby thebs » Wed Jun 15, 2016 6:52 pm

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti has now dropped as much as US$100 (and US$200 turn of the year) since the "Founders' Edition" GeForce GTX 1070 units started shipping. Looks like they are trying to clear old GTX 980 Ti stock.

Yeah, I think I'll go with MSI this time too (currently have EVGA).
But I'm still waiting for VR, which will probably be another 6 months.
It's time to give this another go.

So sweet. I've been very impressed with my MSI Twinfrozr GTX780, and have been waiting for this baby. Congrats to you. :)

Not planning on plunging in to the VR fray?

It sure is a sweet piece of kit.

But this: Image

Isn't making me want to break out my credit card any time soon (I have a 980ti)

I think I will keep my rig as is for a year, maybe two and then build a completely new one.
Apart from the GPU (and a faulty MB) it's from mid 2014, Put another two years on it and I should have gotten my value.
Well thinking of moving it to an HTPC role, rather than main rig so wouldn't be done with it then either.

Rule 2: No such thing as overkill, as long as there are reloads.

Thanks

Yeah VR is definitely in my plans. Maybe later this year or next year.

I cannot speak to the HTC Vive, but for the Oculus Rift, the GTX 980 Ti and GTX 1070 are sufficient in my book -- unless you're doing mining, especially ice mining in densely populated rings. Then you'll want a GTX 1080, but you'll still likely drop under 90fps.

I was extremely surprised how good my GTX 980 Ti was at planetary landings. It was shooting the mining laser in ice rings that finally got the FPS really down. So a GTX 1070, with the Rift, does very well. The GTX 980 Ti is also sufficient. The GTX 980, much more the GTX 970, will not.

YMMV with the Vive.
