Elite: Dangerous PvE - Mobius

I ran across another Mobius player who sent me a direct message saying, basically "hello, nice day we're having". I haven't messed with comms at all and wasn't sure how to send a response. I ended up targetting him but wasn't sure where to go from there.

So what's the quickest way to reply to a message like that? How do you communicate with others in general? And how do you detect when another CMDR is nearby?

Hitting tab should cycle through the various open channels including friends and whatnots.

To reply to the last person that sent you a direct message, just open your comms type '/r' (without the quote) and you can start typing.
