How does one differentiate players from npcs?

Yep, another one from me. I know about players having CMDR before their name, but i wouldnt want to have to scan them everytime i want to see if it's player or npc.
Like for instance on this image, the radar seems pretty crowded, but i'm not sure if any of them are actual players.

Check the names. A player will have Cmdr. before the name. NPC's do not. Normally the player on the Radar will be hollow, but there have been situations in the past where they were shown as solid on the scanner. The only reliable way to tell is name.

from that picture it would appear that noe of the ships surrounding you are player controlled.

A CMDR's ship will have a hollow icon on your radar, square (□) for with hardpoints retracted, triangular (∆) for hardpoints extended

A NPC' s ship will have a filled icon on your radar, square (■) for with hardpoints retracted, triangular (▲) for hardpoints extended

I hope this helps

Serinea

Edit: I have seen reports that this isn't always accurate though, sometimes CMDR ships will be filled icons, but it does give an at a glance overview

Another way is to open your coms panel and look at your friends list. Any commander in the same instance as you will be shown under Local, but will only show their ship type (ie: Asp Explorer) until you scan them or if they are on your friends list.
