Is 1.5 64 bit?

Hello,
As the above question.
I know that Horizons is 64-bit. But is the 1.5 update also 64 bit?
I'm currently not getting Horizons. But would like to have a 64 bit version of Elite. The launcher currently says that E : D is 32 bit.
If 1.5 is 64 bit, then would the installer automatically update my version or do I need to download another version of E : D?
Thanks.
Have fun, fly safe.

It's a good question. I'm not sure what to expect as options in the launcher after the release today. I will only log in to 'Horizons' because it has everything but does that mean you only see one entry depending on what you have bought, or (as per your question Falcon) will there be an option to go 64bit vs 32bit for the non-horizons types? Also I presume if there is anyone out there that bought Horizons but can't play it as they don't yet have a 64bit OS that there is a fall-back to the 32bit 'dangerous 1.5' version for them for now....

I believe 1.5 is still 32-bit, probably with the option for 64-bit (at least I'm sure I read something about it somewhere and this makes the most sense).

What is the difference between the two? I know THE DIFFERENCE between 32-bit and 64-bit technically, but what effect does it have on games that utilize 64 instead of 32?

64-bit uses most of your PCs free resources 4gb ram and up. You might experience less stutters/frame drops and short loading times.
32-bit uses ram up to 2gb only, if I remember correctly...

You will probably not see any differences, the 64-bit can
potentially address (use) more memory, consequently less disk access should be necessary... But as the 32-bit version run well in high settings (at least for me) there will be no differences.
For ED:H the minimal memory spec is higher so it's make sense that the game can access more memory...
32 bits can use 2³² ram ≃ 4 G
64 bis can use 2⁶⁴ ram ≃ A lot... basically all ram available on your computer

And the 32bit adress range includes any memory on hardware not just your regular ram. Particularly VRAM is affected by this since gpu's with at least 1-2gb are rather common.
Say you still have a 32bit os (in other words you will still be on xp, that's how long ago we went 64bit) your gpu's ram is counted with the 4GB adress space as well.
In horizons beta sys ram usage was at around 3.8 gig but it wants to use about the same in vram on the gpu as well

Hello,
Just found out on the live stream that there is an option to play 1.5 as 32bit or 64bit.
Now just wondering if the update will download 2 versions of the client.
Seems like it does in the screen shot from beta. Guess we'll know "soon".
Have fun, fly safe.

The short answer is there are now two clients. One is 32-bit and the other is 64-bit. You can play the game with either client, but Horizons functionality is only available in the 64-bit client.
Since 99%+ of PC Elite owners are already using a 64-bit OS (Win 7-10 x64) it shouldn't be a problem.
A 64-bit version handles maths better and can address more RAM that 4GB (the limit of a 32-bit address register) so it can make better use of the power of your PC hardware in the 64-bit version. While in most cases that won't mean the game will go a lot faster, it is less likely for the game to run slower.
