Nope, it's materials u mix and throw in the FSD reaction... I think u gotta use the SRV to find them..

I guess they added this as a way to reach some of the systems that you can't reach with standard drive ranges

Well when they copied me over to beta I was still at Sag A.. saw the boost but couldn't get it to work. Self destructed and got back to the bubble. Slowly learning how Horizons works :p
I like the idea of the boost, but gathering the ingredients seems to be a pain in the tail.

I quite enjoy doing the gathering. Nice and relaxing driving around shouting some rocks and scooping up. I do wish there was a way to identify where you are likely to find a specific type of material as some are obviously rarer than others. Not providing a 'find it here' type POI but on the surface map areas where you are just more likely to find the material. It would remove some of the RNG-ness for the encounters.

Again, I think the type of planet influences the elements found there.. high metal content = high metal content.. Example: Diaguandri - B1 - Very high metal content, has plenty of Vanadium... (FSD stuff..

) look for 'out croppings'
