Sensors: Linear or Logarithmic

So this has been bugging me a while. I can't find any situation where changing the sensors form linear to logarithmic and back makes any noticeable change. I thought it may have something to do with other problems, like not remembering orbit line settings (which I also had), but deleting the player folder didn't help. So is this supposed to be an actual working feature, and if so, please describe how I can see the effect?

What I'd really like to see is an option to allow the planets to scroll off the edge when you zoom in.

Thanks.

Always wondered about this myself.
I understand what a log is, but fail to see any difference between the two settings and therefore any reason why one would choose one over the other, or why they even offered the option at all.
I'd be happy to be shown the error of my ways though

Especially as the scale continuously changes to accommodate something-or-other.

This.

I have collided with ships in space stations because I thought they were farther away then they were.

It doesn't seem to matter what they're set too, they still behave rather strangely....

I did some testing in local space and found that asteroids showed up earlier with the sensors set to logarithmic. That might be enough to save you from a collision in a blacked out asteroid field. Other than that, I didn't really notice any other differences.
