Currently I'm leaning towards two short, simple ones: MS or OMS.

MOO Mobius Order Ordinance. I was Serious.

I get what you are saying. Maybe people could add a hyphen with the function prefix after, if they want to, like OMS-C or OMS-E. If there is a defined list somewhere, they could choose.

Just keep in mind that the name is limited to 22 characters. If you lose six of those (OMS-C plus a space) then it could be tight for some ship names.

I'm not near my games PC at the moment but I've got this vague memory of there being an 'ID' field as well as a name. Maybe the ID field should be for the Order identifier?

Of course I'm now wondering if I just dreamed the existance of an ID field. :(

Yeah, ship id is a separate field and limited to six characters.

So we could go for that then. Is the ship ID visible in the HUD when ship is scanned or is it only visible on the ID plate?

I don't know, from what we tried in beta neither shipname or id showed up, so I guess it's bugged.
And we tested with nice names too.
