Soul-crushing loneliness of the void...

Postby CMDR Dragonporn » Sun Feb 17, 2019 3:48 am

Planning my first Colonia trip, doing some final preparations. Part of me is a little excited, another part is completely terrified. Been only like 500ly away from the bubble, and it already felt quite lonely and desperate, but 20k ly? Oh boy...

Anyway, how do you guys deal with space madness? I mean, what if I get stranded? Or lost? Or... or I run into huge angry aliens? The things they'd do to me... Oh no. And there would be nobody to talk to, no one who can hear my plea for help, what am I supposed to do out there? All alone?...

On serious note, anything I should know about Colonia? Any places to visit there or along the way? Any other tips? Don't wanna miss out on anything, because not gonna stick around there too long. Lots of business in bubble still.

Went there early 2017 did stay for over 3 months cost a few bucks to ship ships out there. Enjoy the ride something I did not do as I wanted to get the jumps over with that was my mistake plus I did not have VR - chit now I may have to do it for the VR/Exploring ride. Anyway have fun.

If you feel a bit unsafe for your first trip to Colonia, I'd advice you to guide yourself with EDSM. There's a route someone saved there that gets you through safe outposts every 2.5 to 4.4 LYs:

https://www.edsm.net/en/galactic-routes ... me/Colonia

While you're at it, look at the Galactic map:

https://www.edsm.net/en/galactic-mapping#2/0/0/25000

You can filter several types of POIs so you can deviate from the main route for cool things.

Only real problem is boredom.

There's not even npcs out that way, until you colonial so the only "danger" is crashing into suns.

My biggest fear that I'd just go insane from the trip and uninstall in the process... Maybe good music would help though.

For the route itself, using neutron-highway plotter, have big enough scoop equipped and AMFU to be safe, also heatsink just in case, so I should be fine. Overall jump should be around ~30 Ly or so, still doing weight adjustments. Shouldn't take too long, hopefully won't run into complications along the way... Any words of encouragement are welcome, haha.

Even if you enjoy exploration, the jump and scan and explore routine can get a bit boring when you're doing it for the 400th time! I broke up the journey by visiting different nebula along the route, and doing it in stages like that made it a bit more palatable.

Be aware, i could not find a single station in the Colonia region that had A rated modules, and even the engineers in Colonia are grade 1 and 2 only. One of the good things about the region was mining, I found pristine rings out there a lot easier than I do in the bubble, just wish they had introduced the deep core mining element earlier so i could have taken advantage while i was out there!

Only reason I got as far as Colonia once was because I hunted for non sequence stars and used the hyper jumps.
Not really for the increased jump length, but to actually having to do something during the boost scoops.

And this was before there was a neutron plotter so I used the actual in game map filter.
The risk of that being a neutron or a black hole just added to the break in monotony.

Once I did make it to colonia though I unloaded all my scans, scrapped the asp and suiced back to the bubble inside of five minutes.

I bring there ship to finish engineering it with modules and mats ready to upgrade. As far as I know, Mel Brandon does G5 thrusters and G3 (max) SCB, which is similarly hard to unlock with bubble engineers. Going to Colonia is slightly less tedious than grinding Dangerous combat rank for me, which Lori needs to unlock, and Palin needs you to travel 5k Ly anyway. It's quarter of distance to Colonia, so why not simply go there? Also I kinda wanted to visit it, see it for myself. Plus only 6 engineers left for me to get max reputation with them, so there's also that. Trying to kill few birds with one stone here.

Regarding Exploration, I do enjoy it to some degree. It feels incredible, especially DSS mapping. When you're all alone, far away from populated space, have amazingly fitting music. And see those probes fly there, leaving beautiful trails in sync, aligning with a musical rhythm. The only problem is, DSS was broken for last 3 months or so, and these shitheads from FDev aren't in any hurry to fix it, despite all the reports their getting...

Still 9k left to Colonia. More loading screens, MOAR! I think I'm starting to lose it, haha.
At one point I kinda regretted I didn't join DWII, now I'm SO happy I didn't, would probably self-destruct by now... multiple times in a row.

I mean, why basic ship jump range can't be around ~100 Ly? Why FD thinks that seeing more loading screens would add to feeling of infinite space? To be fair, judging by the map, Colonia is like 2 steps away from the bubble, and Beagle Point is not too far either. With current jump range capability, I don't think there's man alive who can make it to the rear end of the galaxy. While it's realistic, it defeats the purpose of the game, and having SO huge galaxy, where you won't be able to see even 1% of it in your lifetime seems unreasonable. From my journey to Colonia, I've noticed that galaxy is slightly different from one in the bubble, stars are way more dense, different hues and color filters, etc. It would be great to see it all, but considering how things are in this game, ~90% of playerbase won't be able to ever see anything much farther from bubble space.

Edit:
Did some experimentation on the way. Some folks been saying that after 80% FSD damage, it can drop you from supercruise. Currently my FSD is at 17% and it didn't drop me from SC once yet. Only thing it does, is disrupt your FSD charging, and more it damaged, more chance it will fail to charge. I also noticed that if you overheat your ship, it somehow lowers chance of FSD malfunction. So, if your FSD is broke, the best thing you can do is fry your ship, heh.
