Hey everybody. I´d really like to join the fight against the Thargoids but I can´t afford a half-decent T-10 for a long time. Haven´t played for a while and my limited time makes grinding difficult. What´s the smallest possible - and sensible - ship to join the fight in?

I believe the Fed ships are the best suited so armour tanked FAS, Dropship, FGS. You'll probably need a wing too.

I dropped into the aftermath of an attack last night but the thargoid had already gone so I picked up what was left and took it to a station.

I'm an Elite Dangerous noob, but many years ago when I played EVE Online under the tutelage of Eve University, big fleets were always supported by smaller craft with repair bots. Would this be an option in ED for smaller ship players to support the bigger ships with repair limpets?

No.

The p2p core mechanic is not reliable enough.
At best you get 4-5 players to reliably connect and this is honestly a 50/50.
Usually at least one or two will fragment instance and be only seen as wing beacons.
And to amend this they would have to basically re-invent their core multiplayer mechanic.

The fact is ED is NOT and MMO. It has far more in common with the mp aspects of Dark Souls than Eve.

And mechanically.
Repair limpets take about ten seconds to repair just a few hull points on normal builds, let alone on armour tankers, not really something for combat purposes.

Although shield boosting is a thing with beams and the engineer regeneration special effect.
But as said. Even at say a wing of four and the game STILL struggles to keep everyone in one instance and the performance hit for playing in a wing is just obscene.
Talking an easy >50% drop in fps with a full wing.

I couldn't keep ok fps in vr with an i7 4790k and a 1080ti.
After upgrading to an i7 8700k it is at least playable in comvat areas with a full wing.
But only just.

This game sure has a lot of deep core flaws...
