That would have been Frontier: First Encounters (Elite III), completing the Thargoid related missions resulted in you being awarded a Thargoid ship

In the Spectrum 48k while you entered Hyperspace, you could press a set of keys (I do not remember which), and you would be transported into a system full of Thargoids shooting at you, until you died and "You are Dead Commander. Load [Y/N]"

Ah yes! There was a way to force a Hyperspace malfunction which threw you into Witch-space so you could hunt Thargoids. I can't remember which platform/version I played that had that (BBC, ZX Spectrum, Amiga, Archimedes, PC)

Yes, you could get one in FFE if you completed the "help the thargoids" fork of the main mission. Unfortunately, FFE was buggier than the first 2.3 beta, so most people never got that far.

I do not remember the Thargoid ships being so difficult in the original Elite, but then again 30+ years is 30+ years...

The interactions so far with them point to them being a bit overpowered, if they can shut down your power systems on your ship what chance do you think we have against them

I can't help but hear the title of this thread sung to the tune of Pulp's 'Do You Remember the First Time' ?

The Thargoid ship was actually in FE2. It was only flyable using hacked saves, but on some of the spying/bombing missions to bases belonging to the other side you could see them on the ground. As if the Federation and Empire were excavating them..

I really wish I played those "middle" games now. After Elite being my favorite game, both on C64 and PC, the later games just looked too crappy, graphically on the box, compared to games like Wing Commander etc. and Flight Simulator, and a bunch of submarine simulators, that I never bothered with them. But it seems there was some interesting stories and gameplay that I missed. Water...bridge...
It's time to give this another go.
