I try to get as close as possible while in orbital cruise by aligning myself to 0°, 90°, 180° or 270° as much a s possible, with leaving a bit of room for the glide phase.... and then I boost boost boost boost boost boost boost boost boost for a few minutes because I'm bad at it

Try this tool. You give it where you are and where you want to go in Lon/lat and I returned the heading you need to travel in the reach the destination.

You could kill a few birds with one stone and use Screenshot Changer by Mobius's own deCarabas. It allows you to monitor the screenshot folder ED uses and automatically change the BMP files to JPG or PNG. It also does Video as well. Both can be moved automatically to another folder as well.
And it has a Bearing Feature called Planet Navigation. Put in YOUR coordinates and the coordinates you want, and it will tell you what bearing (compass headeing) to fly to get there.
Did I mention it was free? And Cool? And made by one of our own?...Okay good.

If I use it and it works I proceed to shove my nostrils WAY up there to get features I want.

De Carabas is real good about listening and responding.
I have used literally dozens of utilities since I started and SSC is one that I have never stopped using.
