I think the new cockpit damage calculation models in around 2.1, went a bit far for the federal ships, except the vette.
I took an Fgs out and before it was hitting 90 ish hull, the cockpit was gone.
Before 2.1 I was using the FAS as a battering ram.
Shields gone, guns dry = boost to the face.
Carrying an afmu to continously repair cockpit is an option and a fairly good one.
Also a rated life support.
Also got to say, a blown cockpit in VR is bloody amazing.
And if you shift far enough in the seat you can still see the missing HUD, but I just use the navigation ball and distance gauge to left.
