New Surface Map

Postby genpatsu » Mon Jul 11, 2016 9:28 pm

The server went down earlier today, and when it came back up there was something called "Surface Map" under the Navigation menu. I don't know how it works. When I tried to use it, it brought me to "System Map." After a while, "Surface Map" disappeared and I couldn't use my keyboard to navigate the Navigation menu. I logged off and logged back on and it was gone. Note, this isn't the "Surface Map" that's inside the System Map. It was under the Navigation Menu alongside Galaxy Map and System Map. I've never seen it there before and it's gone now.

Its been in since 2.0 beta 1.
Think it pops up when you are close to a landable planet.
Its just a wireframe sphere with bases and your location marked on it.

Its the same thing you acces via the system map by zooming all the way in on a surface planet.

Completely useless.

Indeed, without a way to see cords on the surface (via the wire frame) it is only useful for plotting a course to a surface settlement.

I realize that but that's not what I'm talking about. To access the "Surface Map" I saw, you had to go into the Navigation Menu. It was there with "Galaxy Map" and "System Map," but when I clicked on it, it just took me to the System Map.

I'm probably not the right guy to ask. Since I haven't looked twice at that button since the beta.

I just use the list of bases in the system map.
Could very well be bugged.

Well, as far as I'm aware, "that" map is the only way to check if a base has a commodities market, black market, what's illegal, and etc. I suppose it would get a little cluttered if they put all those bases and facilities on the main map, along with the stations and platforms. The "map" feature of the map itself is pretty useless. I don't pay close enough attention to have noticed any other maps, and FD sure as hell didn't say anything about it (I assume - business as usual).
It's time to give this another go.

You seem to be right.

but the object list will highlight the given planet. The rest is just a matter of zooming in and clicking on the base.

Seriously just calling it a surface map is a misnomer.
It's just a wireframe sphere. Even apple maps has more purpose.
