Can we stop saying "Name and Shame"?

Postby Roger Wilco Jr » Fri Jul 08, 2016 10:21 pm

I understand the purpose of the policy, and agree with it, but it sounds so weak - like we're worried about hurting someone's feelings. These people need to be named and shamed, but because the internet is anonymous it doesn't have the desired social affect. It's just the opposite - they want to see their name, and their actions, in lights. It's griefer porn.

I have two suggestions:

1. Change "name and shame" to something different. Maybe our members could make some suggestions? I suggest something like our "Keep Calm and Carry On Anti-PVP Griefer Porn Policy", or our "Ignore the Bloody Bastards Anti-PVP Griefer Porn Policy".

2. Do not allow posts about griefers - maybe allow a heads-up post to remain a short while, but don't give too much promotion to it. Don't just redact the name; edit the post to only give the vital information and then lock it, and then delete it. There should not be discussions and replies filling up a thread as this is just griefer porn as well. Even if they don't see their name, they know they are the ones being talked about. Ideally, all the details would be handled via PMs and there would be no public mention at all.

Well, that's my 2-cents.
It's time to give this another go.

LOL, nice alternatives :D

Having an open post does tend to keep the reports in one place, I think if we closed and deleted each report we'd spend the evening chasing new posts, but you make a good point about not having protracted discussions.

If someone attacks us in PVE we ARE allowed to smoke their arse, right?

Careful there Kronos. Lest their intentions are to provoke a response and then send in screenshots of you destroying them and then saying it was unprovoked. Most (if not all) cmdrs who attack other cmdrs in one of the Mobius groups is doing so intentionally to grief. In open play there is an excuse. In the Mobius group there is none. It is simply griefing. Best course of action is to get screenshots of the aggressor and let the group moderators vaporize their access to the group.

If there is evidence of PvP, it should be presented to the community as a caution to others on who to avoid.

I don't think that naming leads to shaming, or that naming is a form of shaming.

Would you protect the identifying features of an at large criminal because you don't want them shamed?

I like the idea of changing the language and a 'heads up this is happening' to provide some warning to other Mobius and Mobius PVE members. Perhaps 'don't feed the trolls' policy might be a clear representation of what the purpose behind it. Starving these people of the forum and attention that they so desperately want is by far the most appropriate response. Getting bogged down in 'debate' (term used very loosely) just provides them with more oxygen than they deserve.
