Selling maps

So I decided to type SOL into the galaxy map and then I saw very close by Wolf 359 (some Starfleet debris would be great easter egg) so I decided to plot a route and I've found along the way that I can more than pay for fuel and repairs along the way by selling maps.
How long can I reasonably fund travellings by selling maps?
Whenever I stop for fuel I check the bulletin board for haulage missions to try and earn some cash to buy my ship as I only own my power plant, thrusters and shields so far.

I’ve never tried to fund a trip by selling maps, so I have no idea how long you can do it. But it’s a nice attempt. Let us know how it goes.

Any system listed as unknown when you jump can be scanned and the data can then be sold anywhere outside a 20ly range of that system.
Once you have sold a systems data you can't scan or sell that systems data again for 24 hours.
Stars and planets tend to move so I guess new maps are always welcome hehe.
In short cartographics can be a nice money maker to begin with and if you don't stick to just a few systems practically a perpetual one as well.

Thanks for that. Is that 24 real hours or game hours?

Real hours I believe.

If you purchase a ship with a large jump range with a class A FSD, fuel scoop, advanced discovery scanner and detailed planet scanner... you have the potential to make billions of credits, providing your willing to put in a lot of time and travel great distances.
It's not the fastest way to make credits, but it is one of the most relaxing and easiest ways.
I would recommend having goals rather than just wondering out into the galaxy.
Betelgeuse is a good destination for a first exploration as it's relatively close and it is huge, you will really get a feel for scale of stars in our galaxy.
Another slightly further away location is the NGC 7822 nebula, full of O Type stars and Black Holes, the systems in the nebula are worth millions in exploration data. To find the nebula search for stars starting with S 171
Have Fun.

RE Betelgeuse, make a note of how far you jump out of hyperspace on other stars (normally a few light seconds) and then look at the distance you drop out at Betelgeuse...

There's a good-sized cluster of White Dwarf systems in the Bubble that I think pull 20K credits each? Maybe more. Filter them by Star Class on Galaxy Map View, but remember that they are not scoopable.

Thanks for all the sightseeing info. I didn't think it was that lucrative, just a few K for a page but now I know I'm onto a good think here.
Has anyone come out of frame shift a little too close to a start with your consoles sparking and warnings about heat damage?

I've never encountered any real problems, occasionally warnings will flash with some rare stars.
But then I've only covered ~30000lys/50mil CR in data.
There are some dangers out there like this:
