Well, I was gonna refit my cobra for exploring until I had plenty of cr, think
I'm going for this

Is it necessary to have a repair module for those long trips into the black?

Depends what you mean by long, a 90k ly roundtrip, yea it might be a good idea to have an amu.

But on my 8k (including return) I only needed it when I did something stupid in my shield less asp, and I did stuff like landing on asteroids etc..

I'm a mere baby cr wise and just fancied a taster of exploring before commiting big bucks into it... So a small exploration venture into space I figured I could use my cobra - but having played with the viper mkiv it's jump range is quite high I'm not planning on the sidewinder to sag a type trip just a head out and clock a few 1000 Ly up

LOL Best of luck then.
My sole expedition lasted less than a fortnite before I was bored rigid & headed back for the bubble.
- Used my Asp for rares runs for a bit after that.

Take a look at a Hauler. Yes, its the Transit Van of the fleet, but I used one kitted for exploring on a 18K ly journey and it was cheap and solid. Didn't need an repair module. Remember that ships that are meant to haul take WAY less wear and tear damage when you are out in SC scanning stuff. If we went the same distance in SC, you in a viper, and me in a hauler, I bet you would have 4 times the amount of damage I would.

DBE or asp ain't happening for the cr I'm putting into the viper, and a hell of a lot less repair bills... So figured I would have a go budget airlines style... If it fails I have experienced the solitude of exploration :)

Picked the viper as well for survivability, hauler and me is liable to get picked on by npc's "flashback to my type 6"

Currently 4000LY out on what I expect will be a 10-12000LY round trip. I don't have one fitted, I have 1% damage on a few modules after a lack of attention dropped me out of SC in a binary system and suffered a very small amount of heat damage until I fired off a heat sink. Guns? you won't be needing those out in the black. For a first venture out into the unknown I would suggest a trip out to the Pleiades Nebula, it's not too far out and there's quite a few black holes out there. I did that trip in a stripped out T6 which will give you nearly 30LY range and won't cost as much.

Submit, Boost, Boost, Jump, Laugh. I was worried when I was coming back as SJA (or Mistress of the Minions) FD AI programmer had toughened up the AI's Still no worries. Even now, Submit, Boost, Boost, Jump.

Just don't be stupid like some people and choose no shields. There is NO reason in todays game to ever do anything without shields unless it's racing, clearing your bounty, sidewinder derby, or something equally mundane.
