Mobius is a great group and all, don't get me wrong. But I feel like a second-class citizen who's being told "since you have a problem with attacking actual people, you're not good enough to play with everyone else".

A "Shard" was first used in Ultima Online to refer to a server. Since the World was in the crystal and the crystal was shattered.. each "shard" had an exact copy of the world in it aka each server was a copy of the main world but a separate "shard"

There is only one server, and we all play on it.
What the group mode is simply a white list for the instancing server that let us connect to each other.
I believe it goes something like:
"ooh, there's 3 pilots in azrael, maybe I can connect them.
Let's see, hmm, cmdr dipshit is in open, cmdr Mobius is in group mode 'mobius' so no, can't connect those two.
Cmdr Seven'o9 is in group 'mobius'.
Hey I can connect Seven'o9 and Mobius (executes happy dance)"
Mobius and Seven'o9 meets up, become friends and go on to rule the universe together.
Cmdr dipshit is left alone eating stale churro's while watching redtube on his second monitor.

Why would we need our own server?
Mobius provides the perfect platform on which to play Elite. I am into immersive play. The absolute idiocy that occurs in open play is unrealistic. I pay it no attention.

The problem with an official PvE instancing is that either a) Frontier would need to police it, b) they would have to change the rules so commanders couldn't kill each other. a) is too much effort and b) doesn't make much sense in a word with consequences, you can accidentally kill Eagles that fly into your evil beams of death, but can't hurt a real player who does it on purpose?
