Why do you take part in Community Goals?

For the most part CG's are fun and a diversion from the normal grind of the game, but why do you take part in them?

Personally in the past I took part in CG's because it was a decent boots to my income at the 40% level, but after getting a Type 9 in addition to my Python they are for the most part a waste of time.

At a high paying trade CG the top 5% is occupied by CMDR's often trading 12-20k+ worth of commodities to forward the goal and earn 18 million credits or so as a reward. In a Type-9 that is 24-40 round trips to the turn in and on a normal trade rout that would earn 21-35 million. So what is the draw or allure?

Edit: CMDR Arda was nice enough to link some interesting information here that lends credence to the C rank tier of 40% being the way to go if you are simply concerened with maximizing profit.

I take part in community goals because:
  • Financial: It usually earns me in excess of 20 million credits.
  • Reputation: I often get an increase in PF rank or faction standing.
  • Meaning: It gives me a short term focus for the game.
  • Social: My group of Teamspeak friends encourage each other throughout.
  • Fun: It's a good excuse for flying in wings.
  • Exploration: I usually find out new things about the game.
  • Learning: I find out how better to help others play the game.
  • Break: A change is as good as a rest.

I've only been playing about a month and haven't taken part in any yet. I've considered it but given that accumulation of credits is the only real progression in this game beyond skill operating the ships I am unsure if it would be worth my time. I would only do the combat stuff and the few times I've visited conflict zones the pay rate is significantly lower than RES farming.

If anything I may give it a shot after 1.3 gets released unless someone thinks it's worthwhile to do.

When you first start out CG's are a big financial boost. One of the CG's that ended today titles "THOSE POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS" had a payout of 1.25 mill for those in the top 40% and i hit top 40% with one or two delivery in the Type-9 so it was between 500-1000t delivered.

In general getting into the top 40% is easy and usually just involves getting to the CG as soon as it starts. Getting there soon is especially important if it is a cargo transportation goal because the closest station will have their stock liquidated first. If anything the combat CG's are the best for new players as a Viper, Cobra, and Vulture can easily compete at the level to hold a position in the top 15% if they are dedicated.

I in now way was trying to discourage other players from taking part in CG's. If anything it was more about wanted to find out if others knew about something that I didn't.

Ah yes, cant forget about you stalwart followers of a chosen faction. That is a good a reason as any to follow a pursuit.

The Alliance not being a fully implemented faction often throws me off and because they don't have ranks I often overlook doing anything to help them out. The sad thing is that I started out playing exclusively in Alliance space with a friend but moved on once i could afford a Python. I have yet to go back, but maybe it is time.

for me it's a temporary diversion from the usual and a chance to meet a few PvE commanders. the rewards are mostly ok but in most cases i could have equalled or bettered the total amount of cash made by staying home and doing my regular trade run or RES hunt

also, they are usually about 200Ly or more from my home, so i take a curved route and do some local scanning on the way there and back to help my Exploration rank too, every little bit helps

but as for 'helping the community' - in general, these are the same guys who want to force us all into Open mode, or deny us any reward for not being in Open, and look down on us PvE'ers as inferior. you know what? fuck the community.

I wonder if difficult experiences have left you with a limited view of 'community'. That would be understandable, but it seems to me there are many different communities that play Elite, not just a single one. Of course there may be at least one that espouses the attitude you despise, but I don't have such a jaundiced view. I've found there are plenty of communities - in addition, of course, to Mobius - that aren't like that, and I like offering help within those. There are certainly many individuals within those communities that deserve it.

It varies, I suppose. A part of me prefers a little bit of roleplaying and taking part in ED's digital newspaper drama, the other being just able to see some player ships, and the rest for mostly passing by then reaping community rewards before moving on (and coming back to claim it).

Funny that you should mention RP and Galnet because even having been a CMDR within the universe for some time I was unaware of a majority of current events with RP tie-ins. I was more focused on the mission that the why of it all.

Only within the last few days have I been brought up to speed on everything that was going on in Lugh even though I was there the entire time. I have had blinders on as I was very focused on getting and outfitting my Type-9 and Python. Now that I have effectively reached my goal I am enjoying the game more.

This is the first game I have played in a long time where in many ways it gets better after you have reached the "maximum level" because in all honesty the real joy of Elite has always been the story and I forgot about that in my urgency to have the "best" combat and trade ships.
