Depends on what tool we're talking about. For instance http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/ had a tool that gave you the cost of your insurance and the range of your ship depending on its type, equipment and cargo (in the Ship tab). IMO the game should tell you that, but since it doesn't, and since this is pretty important information (especially the insurance cost), I don't mind getting it from a third party.

In X: TC, you can buy space probes that will give you the state of the market in the systems where you deployed them and the result is about the same as these tools (except that you have to pay for the probes and to deploy them yourself). Would you call it cheating, in this case? I don't, it's just another tool that you'd expect to have in 3300.

I was talking more about my personnel viewpoint. As I say I have no issues with people using these tools but for me I would be cheating myself out of a large chunk of gameplay. It's a completely subjective thing.

I agree, that it is kind of cheating yourself. I also did not want to use any tool at all, but when I realised i would not have enough time to play and try out the bigger ships, I made the boring grind with the tool just to speed it up before the wipe.

In the finished game I am planning not to use anything not sanctioned by "the game" itself, meaning either an official API, any official apps (which are already announced) or in-game assets.
I want to stay "in lore" all the time!

I've also used some of these tools to progress faster and test bigger ships because I was late to the party (I'm not even a month old in ED's universe ), but my point was that if Frontier provided such tools, you guys would probably not think about using them as cheating yourselves.

I used Slopey's too, but only in Offline mode. So all the data I got was from last time I been there. So not sure if that actually count as cheating or just laziness.

And to be fair to Slopey he always said that he would stop making it if FD told him to. Which they did.

People will find them and hopefully share good trade routes.
And as I said before, with the new system maps that comes with beta2 we get hints what goods is needed and exported

I enjoy to use pen and paper to find lucrative routes but I do understand that others want those trading tools.
Its up to each other what they prefer to use as it don't affect my game.
However I can se the reason why they don't allow tools to be used that extract game data as it lead to bugs and unwanted behaviour.
And since we are using P2P and to extract those data I am sure that extra traffic could lead to connective issue and lag for other players that's so not fortune to have a good connection.
