Canister drop & later retrieval

Hi Cmdrs, new explorer here.
Can USSs be picked up and then dumped elsewhere in a system for later retrieval? Can they be dropped on a planet and retrieved later? OR, will they eventually despawn?
In Fallout & Skyrim I would loot corpses and drop the loot for later retrieval. In E:D, I would like to drop the USSs on a planet near the sun of that system and pick them up after I sell the scan data and purchase a more worthy ship to retrieve them in.
Thoughts?
