I'm still playing catch-up here! I Very Much like the sound of what you are suggesting! Just printing it all off and then going to spend some time this evening in the game map looking at all of this... so that I understand what you are suggesting. But on paper, it sounds excellent!

As for duration, I'm happy with 2-3 months...

We will need some latitude so that we don't all end up scanning the same systems and then not get the rewards when handing in because someone has got back before us... (as mentioned in another related link). So a slow enough pace that people can go off and explore and then come back to the meeting pts...

I checked out Discord and it looks ok - can we arrange a meeting there for say, next weekend so that we can have a preliminary discussion on all of this?

OK - guess I had better go and look this route/s up in the ED game map!

I am calling this the Zoological Nebula Tour.

You have clearly done your homework!!! I Love It!!! These all have plenty of usable stars for refuelling nearby (star types M and above in the Map filter i.e. L, T, Y, Proto, Carbon, Wolf-Rayet, White Dwarf and non-sequence stars can't be used to refuel - turn these off if you want to refuel). Best value planets to scan are the Non-sequence stars (neutron / black holes) and the Wolf-Rayet, White Dwarf stars.

Also need to take a surface scanner if you want your name plastered on any discovered systems/planets etc...

And you can moderate access levels so only a few can change things.

You wont need to travel far off the beaten track to find new systems. I was surprised how many i found on my first trip out of the bubble to the Horsehead nebula a couple of weeks ago. Even if the system has been discovered there's a good chance its not been completely tagged or even completely scanned. Believe it or not people go exploring without an adv system scanner.

Everyone using MS Office should be setting up their program to save to "2003 XLS" (technically version 11, 2003 for Windows, 2004 for Mac) formats by default. That way they always work the same in every MS Office version since 2003. The suite will tell you if you need to use a newer format to save some attributes, but for 80% of creations, the "2003 XLS" format usually works, and is universally compatible ... especially with MS Office itself.

Anything using "XLSX" is a crapshoot, unless you have the exact same MS Office -- for Windows (don't get me started on Mac) -- release and exact Service Pack (yes, that's been well documented in 2007 and 2010 -- breaking compatibility with a Service Pack).

Short Version: The MS Office "XML" generation continues to be a bit bucket and multi-billion dollar loss of IP by corporations every year due to lack of Microsoft adopting its own standard, and really not giving a flying f' about even maintaining proprietary standards long-term (much less open, documented ones).

Long version:
Microsoft refused to adopt their own, sponsored ISO Office OpenXML standard that was finalized in 2008, which the MS Office 2007 (and 2008 for Mac) teams utter ignored (even the drafts). Since then Microsoft has created no less than three (3), different and incompatible "transitional" versions in 2007 (2008, aka version 12), 2010 (2011, aka version 14) and 2013 (no Mac version, aka version 15) by default, there are conflicts.

The conflicts are bad between 2007 and 2010 "transitional," that Microsoft even included a 2nd and 3rd "compatibility mode" in 2013 for a reason. Several other nations have already dropped it as a standard (including the UK last time I checked), because Microsoft has refused to implement the ISO 2008 spec, which it calls "strict" and fails to ship various components for to support.

In addition to all MS Office 2007+ versions shipping the verbatim "compatibility mode" for 2003 and later supporting 2003 XLS (version 11), they are well documented in even non-Microsoft standard specifications.

I.e., Boeing-Corel-Sun sponsored OASIS OpenOffice 2001, as well as the newer ISO OpenDoc 2006 (based on OASIS 2001 -- this is what prompted Microsoft to push its faux ISO standard), also document Excel version 7 (95), 8 (97/98), 9 (2000), 10 (XP/X) and 11 (2003/2004) better than ISO Office OpenXML 2008.

E.g., even old OASIS OpenOffice 2001 is 10x as long as ISO Office OpenXML 2008, the latter often just documents how to Base64 encode the binary, proprietary attributes without defining/describing them.

Going the other way, never use MS Office to read/save ISO OpenDoc (.od*) files.

Only use OpenDoc suites from Corel, IBM, LibreOffice, Mozilla-OpenOffice and others for ISO OpenDoc (.od*) files. Microsoft's implementation is incomplete, and only included as most nations require any office suite to support both ISO OpenDoc 2006 and ISO Office OpenXML 2008. Likewise, because most OpenDoc suites implement ISO Office OpenXML 2008, which is the "strict" implementation Microsoft did not support, does not use by default in 2013+ (due to various, missing support), expect issues opening any "transitional" version in the "strict" mode that most OpenDoc suites use.

Disclaimer: I spent time in the mid-to-late '00s helping define the documentation standard for the #1 producer for all technical documentation in the US, and also involved with a very large, technical standards organization that takes content in from tens of thousands of engineers annually. When one has to run very old MS Office 97 on Windows 98 under virtualization to build the F-15K and F-15S, one tends to care about long-term compatibility. I.e., if you're wondering why Boeing helped standardized an office suite format, now you know why. Because Microsoft wasn't, and they still actually haven't (just paid lip service), resulting the continued loss of billions of dollars in IP every year.
