Exoplanet galaxy discovery trip II

Postby buksida » Sat Feb 27, 2016 12:42 pm

So, I'd spent a few weeks in the bubble, scratching around for creds so that I could trade in the Hunter ST (Hauler) for an Asp. Did a bit of bounty hunting in the Star Shark (Vulture) but soon got bored with blasting Anacondas, did a few of the CGs which payed out very well, tried a Robigo run and failed miserably, and did a couple of rares runs but didn't make much.

Finally I had enough to kit out an exploring Asp, the Exo Rubicon, and it was time to kiss good bye to the crowded space ports and get back into the black doing what I love; exploring! This trip will hopefully take me on a wide looping parabola around the galaxy, spiraling in towards Sag A*. As on my previous exoplanet discovery trip I'll post my commanders log, findings, screenshots and space madness induced ramblings here.

Final glance at civilization ... I won't see another one of these for a while!

First stop was the Coalsack, a black planet in a black place.

After about 1kly you start finding more undiscovered stars and planets, this my first on this jaunt, a big blue gas giant I named 'Dory'.

The unknown and anticipation of what you'll find at the next system, and being the first commander to ever arrive at a system are, for me, two great aspects of exploration - its good to be back!

The journey continues, I'm about 2,500ly out now and pretty much everything is unexplored.

Another water world tagged, no Earth-like planets yet.

Clicked off another thousand light years in a somewhat boring stretch of space crossing the "void" between two galactic arms. A lot of Red Dwarfs and gas giants but not much else - that Earth-like world still remains elusive. Got a little roasted at a fuel scoop, glad I bought two auto-repair units, hull down to 97%.

Made it across the void and star clusters are becoming more dense now, as are those Brown Dwarfs which cant be scooped. Thought I'd head for a nebula to give me a sense of direction, should have known though that most systems around nebulae have already been discovered, they're kind of like galactic tourist attractions.

Resting point for the night is the majestic purple NGC 6188 Nebula, 4,400 light years from Sol.

Another leg complete and we're inching closer to the denser sector of the galaxy. Plenty of pretty planets to gaze at on the way.

Awesome screenshots. I've been feeling the exploration itch lately too. A problem I had for a long while was the fact I spent all my time in ED chasing credits and i didn't feel content if my hourly earnings were lower than what I expected.

Now when I actually have every single ship I ever wanted - I have to say ED got a LOT more fun. So - I'll be jumping into my Asp today and hitching a ride across the black as well.

Fly safe o7

Beautiful screenshots! I'm a noob explorer, but I'm learning the ropes and out looking for lovelies like these.

Thanks for the comments, these types of planets do get a bit repetitive, I'm looking forward to getting closer to the center where all the black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs are. The trip to Sag A is a bloody long way, I'm not even a third of the way there yet!

Current target destination (behind the rings) is the NGC 6357 nebula, you need to set targets on the way else you'll go space crazy!

Inching closer to that nebula and still 5,700 parsecs away from my final destination, spotted some funky looking worlds on today's leg ...

It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere, I'm all alone more or less, let me fly far away from here ...
