Just came across this, might be useful to the newbie explorers (such as myself):

I use the Wiki. Scroll down the page and you'll find a table that lists the profits per type of body.

Funny, I went onto that page a few days ago and didn't scroll down far enough to see the list!

I'm heading out for a long exploration trip and I'm wondering if they've fixed the scanner icons?

When I first started exploring they always seemed to be correct, but the last 2-3 times I'd find planets where the icons didn't match. Sometimes a planet that looked like it should be high metal content would be rocky or icy. Other times a planet that looked like it should be rocky or icy would be high metal content, ammonia world, or water world. This actually happened fairly often - at least once or twice an evening.

Generally, the errors showed up if the planets were in the near to middle orbit ranges, but the planets in the outer systems looked like icy or rocky planets and scanned as such.

I'm not sure about the gas giants as I didn't pay attention to the different classes.
It's time to give this another go.

Hi there,

I have some Heavy-Duty exploration spreadsheet made by Libre Office.

Mobius members has free to use or modify it. It predicts somewhat realistic average profit, when DSS objects.

I think terraformable means it has a cloudy atmosphere, a similar mass to earth, and metal content. The distance from the sun and type of sun are also factors.

Also for exploration noobs, you can listen to the planets in the system screen to find out what they are. Here's the method:
