Where do you park in the Black?

I've been thinking about exploring since I got the game, I now have a Diamondback Scout and almost have her kitted out right for self-reliance and learning how to explore.

When you are out exploring and beyond civilization, how do you protect yourself if you need to log off? Just hope no one finds you till your ship leaves the game (if it does, not sure about that either)

Yeah - no worries. Just log off and when you log back in you will be where you were last.

I used to be worried that if I logged off in the orbital path of a planet that I might get smashed, but it keeps you in the same position relative to the planet. I usually parked in orbit around a planed I just scanned so I would have a nice view when I logged back in.

You have to sleep sometime. Your ship is just a mote in the vastness of the galaxy. When you shut her down to take a nap, you are almost invisible to any ship that may be in the area. They would have to drop out of SC at your location, and then see you out the canopy, in order to even know you are there.

Anyway, in mobius nobody is going to shoot you up. Worst case, you'll get woken up when some pirate NPC hails you over the comms.

Or - it's just a game. ;)

No need to fear, when you log out you are removed from the game, just don't log out in an asteroid field.

the only concern i've ever had is the movement of the star/planets/moons themselves and so i try to keep away from any orbit paths. a moon in the face hurts more than any Anaconda would

I generally fill up on fuel at my last star, then go directly away from it for about 1,000 light secs. Zero throttle, then drop out of sc and log-off. Never had a problem.

I extited last night and forgot to shut my engines down as I was heading to a star 40,000 ls away. Logged in and was only 368 LS away. o.0

Because I'm weird and a nerd, i always log off somewhere picturesque :P
Always orbiting a nice planet somewhere.
Oh and shut down every module except for Life Support to let the ol' girl cool off and watch the ice forming around the edge of the window. Listen to the planet etc.etc.
Settling down like that is quite serene.

... I need to go exploring again soon :P

Just a bit of a hint because it's caught out a few others.
DO NOT... EVER, log out in an asteroid belt or planetary ring... Even when you're logged off the belt/asteroids still move and rotate, so the chance of you logging back in and your ship spawns inside of an asteroid (leading to a magnificent explosion and a buy-back screen) is pretty damned high...
Haven't done it myself, but there are many many stories of this.

Good Info. I either log out in the middle of no where to lessen the chance of an encounter or somewhere pretty
