Hi there Steve!
Good to see someone close to my time zone (The Netherlands) now I just hope you are PC gamer ....
New in Elite ? Really ? Oh man so anxious to hear what you have to say after you are about 10-20 hours in game.
Because a lot of people that say Elite Dangerous has gotten too dangerous say it's not for new gamers now. Lol. So I like to know someone's opinion who just got it!
Welcome here and feel free to add my to your Friend List, however don't think that will do any good if you are on Xbox tho...

You do know that you can start playing solo and once accepted to Mobius just switch and you will "just" be in another instance?
I mean you can switch solo, open, Mobius back and forth never loose progress. You can choose which every time you play.

Welcome to the group, Steve.
The learning curve in E-D is pretty darn steep, so be sure to ask a lot of questions.
We're here to help.

Most players have had difficulty docking, you'll get the hang of it. And as JohnLuke already addressed, ask plenty of questions. The people of Mobius are more than happy to lend a helping hand. Most importantly, have fun, there is no real goal, but as you've already played the X-series, I'm sure you'll find your way around Elite.

Be sure to do the training missions. I know I did and that helped. And don't feel bad about losing your ship (the sidewinder). It comes free.
If you have done some outfitting you can check the rebuy costs it's wise to have more cash on hand than your rebuy costs are
