Hello from Chicago

I've been playing since Christmas, and I have logged in over a week of play. Usually I play solo, since pvp in this game doesn't really makes sense for traders/explorers, and that is what I have been doing for a few weeks. I fight in a Vulture and explore/trade in an Asp Explorer. I usually start around Nehet, since they have a nice RES that is just a two minute flight from the starbase. I have Horizons, but I haven't done any planetary landing yet. I've been trying to build up bit of wealth before doing that and going into Arena. I also plan on mining, but that looks drab. I want to at least try it out, though.

I play a lot of games, but Elite has been the only one for a while now. I'm a member of TOG (The Older Gamers), and I play on a few of their communities.

And here I thought the closest person in the game to me was about 3 hours away. (I'm also in Chicago) Welcome!

Chicago? Brrrr...only ever been to airport but I have a vivid memory of chicago one winter. I flew to Oregon to visit my dad. Stopped at O'Hare, it was winter and snowy. I did my usual go through customs as I needed to have a smoke after an 8hr flight. (Ive given up now 18mnths :) ) I stepped outside in just a shirt. Lit fag, took one drag. It was -30C windchill. Holy macaroni. All my heat evaporated as if id just dumped a heat sink out my ass.

I bought some nicorette style gum instead.

Yeah, most of us who live here wear coats. :-) Though I think 2 years ago, there was a day in January when it was -54F, and of course I had to be out in it.

I had called an Uber to get home, but I was downtown, and the GPS signals go crazy around all the tall buildings. I took of my glove for 2 minutes to help guide him to what corner I was standing on, and I thought I might have to have him drop me off at a hospital instead of home. Thankfully the car had a heater vent in the back of the center console. I was holding my hand up to it for about 15 minutes before I finally got any feeling back.

That said, it's nearly room temperature here today.

We had a spot of good weather this weekend, but it's all gone now. I think most people that live in Chicago have very short-term memories. We hate it during the winter, then when the weather is livable, we forget how much we hate it during those 3-4 months. If I wasn't married and with 2 kids, I would have moved to Vegas or someplace in New Mexico years ago. Maybe I'll find a nice desert planet in game, hook up a few space heaters in the basement, and buy a VR headset and live in cyberspace for a few months every year.

Honestly, I hate the summer more. At least when it's cold you can do something about it.

I drive 90 minutes every day. When it's winter, that can easily triple. This year was a blessing, though. I don' t think I had a single bad commute because of snow.

I take the Metra to work, as my office is in the burbs, so I usually only have to worry about a 15 minute stretch on a shuttle bus. But then, my commute is about 90 minutes one way on the best of days. It's not as rough when chilling out on a train though.

I've found if I try to go by car, it always takes as long or worse, even if I leave earlier.
