Hi, what do people in the Elite Universe do when we would pull out our mobile? Do they have something like a mobile, and what is it called? Have they switched to something wearable or even implanted? Anyone know please?

I'll have a look at the writers guides and see if i can find anything but TBH i can't recall seeing this question answered in the private writers forum or any of the fiction guides so i wouldn't hold your breath.

my suggestion is to just make something up, as its fan fiction it doesn't really matter if its 100% cannon.

Update: i've just skimmed through the human technology document and there is nothing about a type mobile phone technology in there.

Form the size and weight of docking computer, limpet controllers etc I wouldn't be surprised if they had dis-invented mobile phones!

there is your answer then, give them a star trek style com badge and route all communication via their ship ;)

Despite the fact that a broken canopy breaks the HUD's, I read somewhere (not sure if it was on the official forum, the wiki, or the pilot's manual PDF) that the HUD isn't part of the ship but is some kind of pilot's wearable. The idea is that when we'll be able to walk around, this is what will keep giving us information. They also say that it's the reason why the HUD's are the same in every ships, as they're aren't technically part of the ship.

I'm pretty sure that in 1000 years from now, it will be possible to have VR (virtual reality) or AR (augmented reality) systems that tap directly into your brain to provide sensory information, probably using implanted micro computers. In this case, the comms window and the voice comm we use in the ship being part of the HUD, there's no reason they wouldn't be present also when you're not sitting in your cockpit.

I can come up with various things that would contradict this theory, though (broken canopy breaking the HUD, text based comms, voice comm that sounds like poor radio transmissions, etc.). IMO, if we're still here in 1000 years from now, the way we communicate will probably be more like what John Scalzi came up with in Old Man's War (which I highly recommend if you haven't read it).

They're keeping tech deliberately backward in some ways in the Elite universe I think... no autopilots, no automatic re-distribution of power, enormous weighty dedicated computers in ships... think I'll sidestep the issue as much as possible. One thing I will assume is that some people have implants or patches that let them sub-vocalise for private conversations

What about that big useless thing between our legs

No not that you dirty boys and girls! The big screen thing that looks like a tablet between the pilots legs, could that be a communicator of some form. Personally I always liked the Starwars small hand held things that the hologram springs up from.

Hee hee :)

You know, I think you ay have just cut the gordian knot. 'She spoke into her communicator.' Simple, no description or further detail needed.

Think I'll still asume some people have some implants as I wrote that the other day...

Some of the E:D novels speak of characters having implants which can communicate, access data nets etc.
