I got lucky this time. Neutron Stars are relatively safer because of longer jet-cones.

I find it's usually not worth the effort to use White Dwarf boosts - it takes about as long to supercharge the FSD for +50% range as it does to make another jump. FSD repair costs and non-negligible likelihood of crashing into the star (as shown in the video!) add to the negatives.

Neutron stars however are incredibly helpful for long distance travel. :)
