Did that look like there was fisheye or something weird going on near the left/right edges of that video?

How did I not think about doing this... I've walked outside of my ships but somehow never occurred to me to try this on the SRV... guess I know what I'm doing next time I land on a planet.

Thanks for the Shadowplay info, Bob and Kled. I thought I read something on another forum over the weekend that said there were problems with recording from the Vive using SP, but obviously that's not the case here.

Good to hear!

Oh, that is so awesome! 8-)

Man, what I'd give to be able to take footage like that to use in my Turjan's Travels video stories. The Vive or Rift are way beyond my budget though, so I'll just have to enjoy views like that vicariously and keep on using the standard cockpit camera to grab my shots. Ah well

It is due to the image being 'flattened' for a 2D display. In the headset the image is projected more like a sphere that you are looking around and there is no distortion. You can see the effect normally at the edges of a widescreen monitor (especially if you have increased the FOV). If you look at a planet in the center of your screen you will see it as round, move it to the edge and it will start to distort becoming more egg shaped.

It has taken me over 2 years of penny pinching to save up for this LOL Had to upgrade graphics card too but had factored that into the saving scheme ;)

I was having one of my periodic pointless purges of my bookshelves recently when I turned up The Art of Human-Computer Interface Design, published in 1990, with an article by Scott S Fisher on Virtual Interface Environments.

Some very poor b&w photos of this https://design.osu.edu/carlson/history/ ... md_JPG.htm and this https://www.nasa.gov/ames/spinoff/new_c ... 5SEI6JyyCd show how far (or not) the technology has moved.

It's clear from the article that most of the issues behind VR were already addressed by 1990. That it's taken nearly 30 years to get where we are - not as far as they were anticipating in the last century - shows how hard it is.

At least today we don't have to get dressed up to enter a virtual world.
