JohnLuke's encounter with a Black Hole....

Hey guys,
I had my first encounter with a black hole this weekend! Whoot Whoot!
After cautiously circling it's perimeter a few times and doing a little internet research, I kept sneaking up closer.... and closer.... until I was brave enough to get sucked in.
I got kinda freaked out after dropping out of SC, so I didn't look around as much as I could have. I probably should have used a heat sink before leaving too, to minimize heat damage. But... the ol' Asp is no worse for the wear.
Here's a 2:33 video clip of my encounter..... hope you enjoy!
**be sure to play it full screen!!**For the BEST quality video, please download it from my
Dropbox here. *note -it's 43mb*
For good quality, go to the video on
YouTube here.
Or.... if you're in a hurry (I think the video quality is a little lower when linked this way ) .....

Lol that's actually kind of scary. More reason for me not to approach another.

They are scary but amazing to fly by. I have some footage from several black holes I've bumped into during my exploration. I'll make a video of my Sag A* run when I actually get back since I want to capture the whole trip in the video.
This one looks a bit strange though because there are not so many stars around it compared to that space-cloud-dust-thingy from the background. Looks unique.
P.S. Good god man how do you not lose your eyes looking at those UI colors

Have seen a few black holes already from earlier trips. It's well documented that Maia and Mintaka both have black holes, but I never dared too close. I also treat neutrons will respect too. Get them scanned and point the nose away.
Hope you didn't sustain too much damage. There's a much bigger one to find later.

Cool. I haven't seen a black hole myself yet.
I guess I have an old fashioned view of black holes, with accretion disks and tidal stresses that will tear you apart if you get near them. The next video that auto-played showed a guy fly inside one through one of the "poles". Nah, I don't buy it. I think Frontier needs to change their modeling, or require special equipment to enter a black hole (Heechee) w/o being destroyed.

Good video. If you drop out of SC close enough, and then travel in normal space towards one, you hit the boundary exclusion zone and cant go any further.
It is leaving that does the damage through overheating if you just hit SC
It is a bank holiday weekend here in the UK, so traditional to see seaside postcard humour. Carry on, Sergeant

I was about 1,000ly below the galactic plane, so the star field was probably less dense than some other areas.
Regarding my blue HUD colors.... I wonder how guys deal with the orange illumination.

The green tint to the Asp's dashboard was due to lighting in that system. It had 3 class B stars, but the lighting on the interior of the ship got weird around the black hole.

Nope, not at all. No increase in hull damage, and I didn't notice any increased module damage either.

In my current trek, I am yet to encounter a black hole. I know I'm about 7000ly away from the big daddy of all black holes though.

Just found a binary black hole system - nothing else here.
...and I got here first
