Planet Navigation

Postby Orochimaru » Mon Jul 03, 2017 8:11 am

Hello
I have read comments from CMDRs complaning about planet navigation.
I found this post in reddit with a visual quick reference that I post below.
The link to the post and Kudos to the author.

I have not tried it myself yet.

Well, I'm either really brilliant at it, or, far more likely, people end up over complicating the navigation bit by obsessing on finding the one optimal bearing that brings you to both the desired Lat and Long at the same time.

Our ships are so fast in orbital cruise we can easily go around the planet twice in the span of a few minutes, when you have that luxury it's not longer expedient to focus on calculating that one bearing.

So I just simply focus on Latitude first, by moving only at 0 and 180.
When that is within a few minute deegrees, I do Long by flying 90 or 270.
When I'm within a minute or so I drop from cruise, you can't really control your drop so the last few km is spent hunting closer to the surface.

Of course real life navigation need to calculate the optimum bearing, but that's because of time it takes to travel and economies around fuel etc.

Also, this site http://hotdoy.ca/ed/bearing/ even though I don't use it cause I'm weird.
Is brilliant. although with my approach I'm halfways to the desired area by the time my wingman has finished typing in all the numbers.
And since I'm in VR, I have to use my phone, and a bug with my phone and the input fields used I can't enter negative coordinates.

Rule 1: Pillage. Then burn.
Rule 2: No such thing as overkill, as long as there are reloads.

I made a youtube vid for planetary navigation. Maybe it will also help.

Know where and how to go is one thing. Going to fast and not being about to do 90 degree turns to stay on a grid path, OR too slow in space normal speeds is the problem.

Ive just taken a week off, because finding a simple grid coordinate, took me a week of real time flying, and I could have flown to Colonia and back in the time.

That is the frustration point.

I took this long weekend (Fri-Tue) to go camping, shoot guns, and relax. Now Im back to get another dose of piss me off until I walk away.
(But thats ok I still have ESO to take my anger out on.
