7 SECOND RULE FOR SUPERCRUISE

Postby Capricos » Fri Apr 21, 2017 8:59 pm

Hello all.
Here is a helpful tip for new folks and possibly even veteran folks. I call it the seven second rule.
When you are cruising towards anything in a system, from planet to cz to uss, to station, etc., you accelerate at 100% towards until your time until target is at 0:07. Around 0:08 reduce your speed to 60% throttle. Regardless of how far away you are, when you are at 60% throttle with 0:07, the time will not move. It will be a steady decline of distance without any need to adjust until you reach your destination.
This works in any ship. It does get impacted by gravity of planets, stars etc. Other ships passing by will not alter it. However, if you have to fly around a ringed gas giant to get to your station, you're going to have to play with the throttle. However, I will add, if you don't touch it, it will eventually correct itself back to 0:07.

Yup, good tip. I have a button set for 75% throttle, and tap that button at 7 seconds out. Don't touch the throttle until after you drop into normal space, and you won't do the loop of shame.... at least not very often. ;)

That tip, and many others, are in our Tips and Tricks thread.

I just do it by distance, if it's 2k LS or under I'll reduce speed at about 600-700 LS. Anything over that and I'll reduce at around 800 as you tend to be going a bit faster than normal.

If you reduce at six seconds it will either settle back to seven seconds, or continue to 5 seconds on downward. I've done this about 15000 times or so now.

To safely exit supercruise, both your speed and distance need to be in the blue zone:

Once your speed reaches the blue zone, you can generally max out your throttle until you're close enough to exit. This will shave a few precious seconds off the approach phase where you're most likely to be interdicted.

It's actually quite possible to do 6 second ETA and still make safe disengage on the first pass. It happens to me all the time too. However, it's all about having a precise throttle. My TFlight HOTAS seems to be one such device. It's pretty finicky at that ETA, but it has stabilized on 6 many times. I have even managed a 5, once. Thought for sure I was going to overshoot.

It is 6 as stated above. I used to use a button combo to set throttle to 75%. Always works.

Since getting an x52, the 75% throttle notch brings it down to 5. No idea why but it doesn't cause an overshoot either. Must be a high 5 (like 5.9 or something) as I don't think they round it, it just isn't shown. If it is settling back at 7 for you, you need to speed up because you are in a gravity well.
