The Viper IV is a 'tank' fighter which is great for people who are rubbish at combat - such as myself. It's the ship I'm currently trying to use as a basis for developing my combat skills (after concentrating on exploring).
Also, don't diss the Cobra Mk IV! It is an excellent starter mining ship - though that is about all it is good for.
