But its in direct price point as the cobra mk3.

I have a second account, and I have recently reset it, and on it I just replaced my starting sidey with a mk4 viper.
Currently mostly C rated and it is quite good, not as fast as a cobra, but not to far off, maybe a little more manoeuvrable, still carry 30t cargo, jump 15ly on c rated fsd.
But the largest difference is combat.

The hardpoint placement on the viper is much better than a cobra.
For instance with cobra you would need gimballed on the class 1, but on the viper two class 1 fixed beams and class2 gimballed multis chew up a low-medium res with ease.

So in short, it's cobra mk3 but with a smidge more combat focus than he cobra.

I tend to agree that the Cobra mk3 and the Viper 4 are rival products ingame and compete in the same ship niche. Pretty happy with my Viper 4 so have no plans to get the Cobra 3. I am considering getting the Cobra mk4 though since I promised a friend in another game I'm playing that he could be a copilot or gunner. To my chagrin, I found out that my Keelback having just one seat won't accomodate another player to drive the Taipan SLF I"m planning on getting once 2.3 drops and I start playing again.

I like small ships so the Cobra mk4 seem good to fillout the mining/exploration jobs that I want to do while leaving my Keelback/Viper4 to do freight/mission runs and even CZ/Hazres bounty runs. Odd ships don't faze me :)

Oh I don't mind the seating in the cobra, I would have gotten one if the station sold it.
It had the viper instead so there you go.
I have now traded it for a diamondback scout, so it was a brief afair.

As for Multicrew, other than helm it seems REALLY limited.
You can use turrets and seeker missiles, or fighters.
The hardpoint convergence on the cobra may not be great for fixed guns, but putting turrets on one is not a good idea either, (they would still be forward facing).

Python, same deal.
Asp Explorer, same deal.

So it actually look as the first ship useful for multicrew is the federal gunship, but that costs 100+ million and is behind a federal rank requirement to boot.

Basically unless you own a conda opening your ship up to crew is utterly pointless.

...and I found out that I'm not qualified to purchase the Mk4 ingame so that's that.

Thanks for the multicrew tips! Being empire aligned in powerplay, the Federation is a no-go for me. I think I should look for a 2 seater so I can have my friend pilot the SLF instead. And judging from the costs, the next ship I need to get is a T7 just to have a reasonable chance of getting the one I want.

Just bought my 3rd one, viper mk4 all the way !
Just fits all my needs, very adaptable and cheap...dont need a bigger ship, i settle with 1 million a day as an income.
I run, and it runs fast enough...and is well protected.
Diamond explorer...5.5 mil. for an A class fsd, i just sold that damn thing and bought me an mk4 all A rated.
If i get destroyed with no assurance, i have 2 other mk4's ready...all A rated.
Tried the cobra, just not as efficient if you want to do alot of everything, and the "T's", nice but too big for now.

See you when i see you, fly safe !

Well, there is the Keelback if ya want to give someone a fighter to fly. Personally, the only reason I got one is for if I want to fly an SLF myself. The 2 ladies I have on retainer to fly as my escorts haven't even reached Expert rank yet, and I'm not handing control of something with a rebuy cost in the 10's of millions until they at least reach Master. Even then I might not be keen on the idea. But I'll have to concur Tor, many of the 2 seaters are hardly worth bringing someone else along, as I count not just the ships you listed but also the Vulture and Fer-de-lance in that group. Rather pointless, IMO, save for the "mentor" role, if ya now someone that actually wants to sit back while you show them some pointers.

When I was choosing which ships to fly for what, I noticed that no matter what type of pilot you wish to be, there is a better ship to do the job, then the MK4. So during my selection process I bypassed it all together

Keelback has a fighter bay, but no second seat, so you can't start a multi crew session with one.

But the vulture has a second seat why???

One for the left gun one for the right

MIght as well.

In all honesty Multicrew does just barely make sense for the top 3.
And I consider corvette to be best used with fixed guns, the conda with gimballed.
The cutter should just stay out of combat all together.

Flying someone elses slf's is fun and all, but outside of that Multicrew is utterly pointless.

I think a lot of the issue is that people expect the same thing out of the Mk. III and Mk. IV, the fact is they're two very different ships.

Viper Mk. III is a high agility fighter, and compromises have been made to maximize that agility. If you want something cheap, fast, agile with a bite and OK shielding/hull then it's a great ship.

Viper Mk. IV has gone the other direction, compromising the Mk. III's agility for heavier armor and shielding. It's still cheep, reasonably agile. But it has more power for weapons (making things like Beams/Railguns/PAs/Missiles more accessible) and can take much more of a beating than the Mk. III.

Comparing the two isn't comparing apples to apples, more like apples to pears. They both serve the same role, the same size footprint and in the grand scheme of things roughly the same price bracket. BUT they are different approaches. Neither is really better than the other because of that, it really comes down to preference between agility and flexibility/durability and that is not 'better'.

It's got to be just a personal taste thing. It appears to me that the Cobra MkIII is cheaper and in most aspects the same or better - with the exception of armour and shielding.

I don't enjoy flying the Cobra much but found myself loving the Viper MkIV. I use it as a mini multi purpose alternative to the Python. I think I have to stress though that I got the thrusters A rated and engineered more or less straight away so your mileage may vary.

No excuse for the Viper IV. Stick with the III and then move on to a Cobra III. Cobra IV is another one to pass on. Utter piece of crap. These incramental "upgrade" ships kill what was good about the previous without going far enough to justify the alterations' down-sides.
Aim to please; shoot to kill.
